The Minerals Commission of Ghana has rejected JSE-listed Gold Fields’ application for an extension of the Damang main mining lease for another 30 years and instructed the company to cease operations and vacate the area by April 18.

Gold Fields applied for an extension of the Damang main mining lease through its indirect subsidiary Abosso Goldfields in December last year.

The company has since the notice of the rejection been engaging extensively with relevant authorities to confirm that its lease extension application had fulfilled all the statutory requirements for such an extension.

Gold Fields is preparing to safely and responsibly cease operations and ensure the safety and security of people, while continuing to engage with the Ghana government to secure the best outcome for all stakeholders.

The company stopped mining operations at Damang in 2023 and was only processing stockpiled ore. There were also no funds earmarked to expand the mine life at Damang through exploration.

Damang had been mined since 1997.
