EPBC approval granted for Medallion's Ravensthorpe
Gold developer Medallion Metals has received final federal environmental approval for its Ravensthorpe Gold Project (RGP), clearing a key regulatory hurdle for the development of its sulphide production strategy in Western Australia.
The company announced on Tuesday that approval had been granted under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act) for underground mining at Ravensthorpe and ore processing at its proposed Forrestania facility.
With both federal and state primary approvals now in place, Medallion is positioned to advance final development planning and execution, subject to completion of the proposed acquisition of Forrestania and the receipt of certain secondary licences and approvals under Western Australian legislation.
“Securing EPBC approval is a significant milestone for Medallion and reflects the quality of the project and the disciplined and thorough approach taken throughout the assessment process. I would like to acknowledge the work of the Medallion team and our advisers in progressing the approval efficiently and within expected timeframes,” said MD Paul Bennett.
He also acknowledged the role of regulators in the assessment process.
“Similarly, the team at the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water should be commended for the clear communication and timely responses throughout the assessment process,” he said.
Bennett added that the approval had materially reduced development risk at the project.
The RGP forms part of Medallion’s strategy to establish a sulphide-based production platform, involving underground mining at Ravensthorpe and toll treatment or processing at Forrestania.
Medallion in August last year signed a binding asset sale agreement with IGO to acquire the Forrestania nickel operation, which reached the end of its life in September 2024 and transitioned into care and maintenance.
