Engineered for Africa: Weba Chute Systems tackles tough materials handling challenges
Africa’s mining industry operates across some of the world’s most demanding bulk materials handling environments. High tonnages, abrasive ores, variable feed characteristics and remote operating locations place considerable pressure on conveyors and transfer points, where poor material control can lead to excessive wear, dust, spillage, belt damage and unplanned downtime.
For transfer chute solutions provider Weba Chute Systems, addressing these challenges starts with engineering each transfer point around the specific application rather than applying a standard chute design. This approach has seen the South African-based company supply engineered solutions to mining operations across Africa including Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and Ghana.
Central to Weba Chute Systems’ design philosophy is controlling the direction, velocity and impact of material throughout the transfer. Rather than simply containing material as it moves between conveyors, the objective is to manage kinetic energy and establish a predictable flow path.
Weba Chute Systems applies cascade and dead-box principles where appropriate to promote material-on-material interaction. Strategically positioned dead boxes create pockets of material so incoming material impacts against material rather than directly against chute steelwork, helping dissipate energy and reduce wear.
Its patented Weba ‘Supertube’ concept further controls material movement through the transfer point, reducing uncontrolled free-fall, turbulence and impact. This can help limit dust generation, material degradation and wear while promoting controlled loading onto the receiving conveyor.
Digital engineering is integral to this process. Weba uses 3D scanning and Discrete Element Modelling to capture plant geometry and simulate bulk material behaviour before manufacture. Engineers can analyse flow paths, velocities, impact zones and potential wear areas, allowing chute geometry and liner positioning to be optimised during design.
Material characteristics including particle size, fragmentation, moisture content, bulk density and abrasiveness are assessed together with throughput, conveyor speed and available space. Wear protection can then be concentrated where required, using suitable liner materials for high-impact and high-abrasion zones.
Supporting this engineering capability is Weba’s growing African footprint, with regional representation providing access to technical support, inspections, spares and maintenance expertise.
For African mines focused on reliability and lifecycle cost, an engineered transfer point is therefore far more than a connection between conveyors. It is an integral component in achieving controlled material flow, protecting equipment and supporting consistent plant performance.
