Intelligent irrigation through digitalisation

Irrigation may still be viewed as an old-school agricultural activity, but behind many modern pumping systems lies increasingly sophisticated drive technology, automation, remote monitoring and predictive maintenance.
As agricultural producers seek to improve efficiency, reduce operating costs and make better use of water and energy, digital technologies are changing how modern irrigation and plant propagation operations are managed, says SEW-EURODRIVE Gqeberha branch manager Phillip Steyn.
Irrigation operators, he says, are facing pressure on multiple fronts. Rising electricity costs, unreliable power supply, water scarcity, ageing infrastructure, equipment failures during peak irrigation periods and labour shortages are forcing producers to improve productivity while reducing costs. Export-focused farmers must also contend with changing international market conditions, tariffs and plant disease outbreaks.

It is a challenge SEW-EURODRIVE says it is positioned to address. Rather than simply supplying motors and gearboxes, the company positions itself as a long-term technology partner, combining efficient drive systems with automation, condition monitoring and predictive maintenance technologies that improve productivity while reducing unplanned downtime.
Steyn says improving efficiency begins with selecting the right drive technology. SEW-EURODRIVE’s IE3 premium- efficiency motors comply with the latest minimum energy performance standards, while its geared motors and centre pivot irrigation gearboxes are designed to deliver reliable performance in demanding agricultural environments.
However, efficient equipment is only part of the solution.
Variable-speed drives optimise motor performance by supplying only the amount of power required by a particular application, whether it is a pump or a centre pivot irrigation system. Instead of continuously operating at full output, motors adjust to actual demand, reducing unnecessary energy consumption, extending equipment life and improving return on investment over the life of the installation.
Intelligent Irrigation
Automation is giving irrigation operators something they have traditionally lacked: real-time visibility of their equipment. “The user wants control and they want feedback,” says Steyn.
Using its Digital Data Interface (DDI) and DriveRadar platforms, SEW-EURODRIVE enables operators to monitor equipment remotely, providing access to operating conditions, maintenance schedules and performance information from virtually any location. This is particularly valuable in agriculture, where pumpstations and irrigation installations are often located in remote or difficult-to-access areas. Rather than travelling to inspect equipment, operators can receive real-time information on smart devices, allowing them to make faster operational decisions and respond more effectively to changing conditions in the field.
One of the most significant developments enabled by digitalisation is the move from reactive to predictive maintenance. Using DriveRadar, SEW-EURODRIVE continuously monitors equipment in the field, identifying abnormal operating conditions before failures occur.
With both the operator and SEW-EURODRIVE’s technical team able to monitor equipment remotely, maintenance can be planned rather than dictated by unexpected breakdowns, reducing costly downtime and improving equipment availability. The system also integrates with smart devices and existing SCADA platforms while enabling operators to analyse historical operating trends, supporting better maintenance planning and more informed operational decision-making.
Digitalisation Shaping Agriculture
Looking ahead, Steyn believes digitalisation will fundamentally change the way irrigation systems are managed. Real-time monitoring, remote diagnostics and intelligent motor control will enable producers to optimise energy and water use while making more informed maintenance and operational decisions.
With advances in automation, predictive maintenance and AI continuing at pace, he expects digital technologies to play an even greater role in irrigation management over the coming years.
“The technology is moving fast. We want to make sure our customers remain at the forefront of that journey,” Steyn concludes.
