South Africa’s defence budget, at about 1.2% of gross domestic product, is considered low compared with international standards. As a result, the local defence industry is experiencing an inadequate flow of domestic orders. Consequently, the country is currently undertaking a defence review, aimed at examining how the country’s defence policy can respond to the challenges of the twenty-first century.

This report examines the key participants in the sector, research and development undertaken by the participants, local and export demand, as well as competitiveness and diversification in the sector, among other issues over the past 12 months and is a summary of other sources of information published in Engineering News and Mining Weekly, as well as information available in the public domain.

The report does not purport to provide analysis of market trends.
