Vancouver-based EMP Metals Corporation has successfully commissioned its Project Aurora demonstration plant, in Saskatchewan, with the facility now operating as a fully integrated, continuous-flow lithium refining plant.

The system has been designed to process 10 m3 a day of raw brine, from wellhead to lithium chemicals, in a simplified manner and at reduced costs compared with other systems.

The company, together with Saltworks Technologies, is now focused on optimising the individual process systems to establish stable operating conditions and generate operational data in support of Project Aurora's next stage.

The operating data generated during this phase will be critical as the company advances its understanding of the process and apply that information to future commercial facilities, says CEO Karl Kottmeier.

EMP's lithium resources in Saskatchewan benefits from favourable brine chemistry free of hydrogen sulphide and oil-derived organics, while offering shallow and low-cost drilling benefits. The company uses direct lithium extraction and currently holds more than 83 000 ha of subsurface dispositions and strategic wellbores in southern Saskatchewan.

These advantages support the company's plans to pursue initial commercial modules targeting between 1 500 t and 3 000 t of lithium products a year, with expansion therefore.

Saltworks is already advancing full-scale plant design and cost estimates for a modular commercial refinery capable of producing more than 3 000 t/y of lithium products.
