Byerwen coal mine (BCM) project.

Location
The project is located in the northern Bowen basin, in Queensland, Australia.

Project Owner/s
Byerwen Coal, a joint venture between QCoal (85%) and JFE Steel Corporation (15%).

Project Description
BCM is an opencut mining operation, which is permitted to extract up to 15-million tonnes a year of run-of-mine coal to produce ten-million tonnes a year of combined coking and thermal coal products for the export market.

The project includes four mining zones comprising eight opencut pits, two coal handling and preparation plants, two train-loading facilities – including rail loop and spur lines, connected to the existing line to Abbot Point – and an augmented power supply.

Coal from BCM will be railed to Abbot Point coal terminal for export.

Potential Job Creation
BCM is expected to generate about 350 construction jobs at peak, with 545 permanent jobs expected to be created once the mine is fully operational.

The project is estimated at $1.76-billion.

The project started production in July 2017.
