Booyco Electronics advances smarter mine safety
Booyco Electronics CEO Anton Lourens spoke to Engineering News & Mining Weekly during the Electra Mining Africa event, held in Johannesburg from 7 to 11 September 2026. Camerawork: Miko Moodley. Editing: Darlene Creamer.
As mining operations become increasingly connected and technology-driven, Booyco Electronics is helping mines strengthen safety through intelligent Proximity Detection Systems (PDS) and Collision Prevention Systems (CPS). The South African mine-safety technology specialist has nearly two decades of experience developing solutions for both surface and underground operations.
Modern PDS technology has evolved well beyond basic collision warnings. Booyco’s solutions can integrate technologies including RFID, GPS and other sensing capabilities to detect interactions between vehicles and pedestrians, provide graded warnings and, where configured, enable interventions such as controlled slowing or stopping.
Data is also becoming an increasingly important part of mine safety. Through its Booyco Electronics Asset Management System (BEAMS), the company enables mines to analyse events, identify high-risk areas and use insights to support proactive safety improvements.
Looking ahead, Booyco Electronics is focusing on smarter data solutions, AI-driven risk analysis, remote diagnostics and greater integration with automated and semi-autonomous mining equipment – helping move mine safety towards more proactive and intelligent intervention.
