Africa’s Rail Future Takes Centre Stage at SARA Rail 2026
The future of Africa’s railway sector will come under the spotlight in Johannesburg this October as industry leaders gather for the 15th Annual SARA Rail Conference and Exhibition.
Taking place from 20 to 23 October 2026 at the Sandton Convention Centre, the conference will bring together railway operators, government representatives, investors, infrastructure developers, manufacturers and technology companies to discuss the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of rail.
Hosted by the Southern African Railways Association (SARA), this year’s conference will focus on “Reimagining Rail: Unlocking Investment and Industrialisation for Growth & Connectivity Across Africa.”
The event comes at a time when countries across the continent are looking to strengthen rail infrastructure, improve regional connectivity and support economic and industrial growth.
A Platform for Industry Leaders
SARA Rail 2026 will provide a platform for leaders and stakeholders from across the railway sector to share perspectives, exchange ideas and explore opportunities for greater collaboration.
With ministers, CEOs, stakeholders, development finance institutions, procurement officers and regulators expected to attend, the conference will bring together many of the organisations and decision-makers involved in the development of rail infrastructure across the region.
The gathering will also create opportunities for businesses and industry professionals to connect with potential partners and engage with developments taking place across the railway sector.
Rail and Regional Connectivity
Rail continues to play an important role in the movement of people and goods, while stronger regional networks can support trade and connect markets across borders.
For Southern Africa, developing more effective rail connections remains an important part of strengthening regional transport networks and supporting economic activity.
SARA Rail 2026 will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the role of rail in supporting greater connectivity and how the sector can work together towards a more integrated regional railway network.
Supporting the Future of the Sector
The conference will also highlight the changing railway landscape, including the role of new technologies and innovation in the development of modern rail systems.
As the industry continues to evolve, collaboration between governments, railway operators, investors and the private sector will remain important in identifying opportunities and supporting the long-term development of rail.
The exhibition will further bring together companies from across the railway value chain, allowing organisations to showcase their products, services and capabilities while engaging with industry stakeholders.
As Africa continues to focus on infrastructure development, industrialisation and stronger regional trade links, rail remains an important part of the continent’s transport future.
SARA Rail 2026 will bring the industry together in Johannesburg for four days of conversation, engagement and networking, creating a space for stakeholders to connect and consider the opportunities ahead for Africa’s railway sector.
