The University of Cape Town is a public research university located in Cape Town, South Africa. It is the oldest university in South Africa, having been founded in 1829 as the South African College, and was granted full university status in 1918. The university is situated on the slopes of Devil's Peak in the suburb of Rondebosch, with its main campus occupying a dramatic setting beneath Table Mountain. UCT is organised into six faculties covering humanities, science, engineering, health sciences, commerce and law, and offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across a wide range of disciplines. It is consistently ranked as the top university in Africa and is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. The university has an enrolment of about 29 000 students and employs roughly 5 000 staff members. UCT is known for its research output, particularly in fields such as medicine, engineering, social sciences and environmental studies. The institution has played a significant role in South Africa's academic and political history, producing notable alumni including five Nobel laureates. UCT continues to be a leading centre for teaching, research and innovation on the African continent.
