Ummbila Emoyeni Wind Farm

Ummbila Emoyeni Wind Farm is a renewable-energy facility located in Mpumalanga province, South Africa. The wind farm represents part of the diversification of South Africa's energy mix in a region historically dominated by coal-fired power generation. Mpumalanga has traditionally been the country's coal heartland, hosting numerous coal mines and thermal power stations, making the development of wind energy in the province strategically significant for the transition to cleaner energy sources. The project is associated with Seriti Green, the renewable-energy arm of coal mining group Seriti Resources, reflecting the broader trend of fossil-fuel companies investing in renewable energy. Financing for the wind farm has involved major South African banks including Standard Bank, RMB and ABSA, demonstrating institutional support for renewable-energy infrastructure. The facility is situated in an area near the towns of Bethal, Davel and Morgenzon in the Mpumalanga Highveld. Wind farms typically consist of multiple turbines that convert wind energy into electricity, which is then fed into the national grid. The Ummbila Emoyeni project forms part of South Africa's efforts to increase renewable-energy capacity and reduce reliance on coal-generated electricity amid ongoing energy security challenges.
