Transnet Freight Rail is the rail freight division of Transnet, South Africa's State-owned ports and rail logistics company. It operates the largest rail freight network in Africa, spanning approximately 20 500 km of track across South Africa and connecting major industrial centres, ports and mining regions. The division is responsible for transporting bulk commodities including coal, iron-ore, manganese, chrome and containers, as well as general freight such as automotive products, agricultural goods and petroleum. Transnet Freight Rail serves key export corridors linking inland production areas to the ports of Durban, Richards Bay, Ngqura, Port Elizabeth, East London, Saldanha and Cape Town. The division operates a fleet of thousands of locomotives and freight wagons, though ageing rolling stock and infrastructure challenges have constrained capacity in recent years. Transnet Freight Rail is a significant employer and plays a critical role in South Africa's economy, moving commodities that account for a substantial share of the country's export revenue. The division has faced operational difficulties including cable theft, vandalism, derailments and maintenance backlogs, prompting government and Transnet to explore private-sector participation and investment to improve performance. Transnet Freight Rail is headquartered in Johannesburg and falls under the oversight of the Department of Public Enterprises. The division was established as part of Transnet's restructuring in the early 1990s following the unbundling of the former South African Transport Services.
