Tanga

Tanga is a coastal city in north-eastern Tanzania and the capital of Tanga region. It sits on the Indian Ocean and is one of the country's oldest ports, historically important for trade and the export of sisal, a fibre crop once central to the regional economy. The city has a population in the hundreds of thousands and serves as an industrial and commercial hub for the surrounding agricultural hinterland. Its port handles cargo linked to regional trade routes and has been earmarked for upgrades to support growing freight demand, including oil and mineral exports. Tanga is connected by rail and road to Dar es Salaam and inland regions, positioning it as a node in broader East African transport and logistics planning. The city's economy also includes fishing, agroprocessing and light manufacturing. Its proximity to Kenya gives it added significance for cross-border trade. Tanga's development is tied to Tanzania's wider infrastructure ambitions, including proposed pipeline and rail projects connecting it to inland production areas. Historically, the city grew under German and British colonial administration as a trading post before Tanzania's independence. It remains a secondary but strategically positioned urban centre within Tanzania's coastal economy.
