Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global objectives adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The goals provide a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, addressing urgent global challenges including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice. Each of the 17 goals has specific targets, totalling 169 targets across the framework, with progress measured through 232 unique indicators. The goals are designed to be universal, applying to all countries regardless of their level of development, and emphasise the interconnected nature of social, economic and environmental sustainability. Key goals include ending poverty and hunger, ensuring quality education and healthcare, achieving gender equality, promoting clean energy and decent work, reducing inequalities, and taking climate action. The framework builds on the earlier Millennium Development Goals, which ran from 2000 to 2015, but with broader scope and greater emphasis on environmental sustainability and inclusive growth. Implementation relies on partnerships between governments, the private sector, civil society and international organisations, with countries expected to integrate the goals into national planning and policy frameworks. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and other UN bodies play important roles in monitoring progress and supporting developing countries in achieving the targets. Financing the goals requires substantial investment, estimated at trillions of dollars annually, combining public finance, private investment and international development assistance. The goals have become a central reference point for corporate sustainability strategies, impact investment and development policy worldwide.
