Subsea Cables

Subsea cables are fibre-optic telecommunications cables laid on the ocean floor to carry data traffic between continents and countries. They form the backbone of global internet and telecommunications infrastructure, transmitting more than 95% of international data and voice traffic. Modern subsea cable systems consist of optical fibres encased in protective layers of steel and polyethylene, with repeaters spaced at intervals to amplify signals over distances that can span thousands of kilometres. The cables are typically owned and operated by consortia of telecommunications companies, technology firms or specialist infrastructure investors. Installation requires specialised cable-laying vessels and careful route planning to avoid shipping lanes, seismic zones and other hazards. Africa has seen significant investment in subsea cable systems since the late 2000s, with multiple cables now serving the continent's east and west coasts, connecting it to Europe, Asia and the Middle East. These systems have dramatically reduced the cost of international bandwidth and enabled the growth of cloud computing, data centres and digital services across the continent. Key routes serving Africa include cables linking East Africa to Europe via the Red Sea and the Middle East, as well as systems connecting Southern and West Africa to Europe and the Americas. Damage to subsea cables, whether from ship anchors, seismic activity or other causes, can disrupt connectivity across entire regions, underscoring their strategic and economic importance.
