Sub-Saharan Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa is the region of the African continent that lies south of the Sahara Desert, encompassing 46 of the continent's 54 countries. It includes all of mainland Africa except Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and Western Sahara, as well as the island nations of Madagascar, Mauritius, Comoros, São Tomé and Príncipe, Seychelles and Cape Verde. The region is home to more than one-billion people and represents a diverse array of economies, languages, cultures and political systems. Economically, sub-Saharan Africa is characterised by abundant natural resources, including minerals, oil, gas and agricultural potential, alongside significant infrastructure and development challenges. Key sectors include mining, agriculture, telecommunications, energy and financial services, with South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya among the largest economies. The region faces pressing issues such as energy access, with hundreds of millions lacking reliable electricity, driving interest in renewable energy and independent power projects. Regional economic blocs include the Southern African Development Community, the East African Community and the Economic Community of West African States. Sub-Saharan Africa is a focal point for investment in energy transition, digital infrastructure and industrialisation, as governments and private sector players work to unlock growth and improve living standards. The region's youthful population and expanding middle class present both opportunities and challenges for sustainable development.
