South African National Defence Force

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is the military organisation responsible for defending South Africa's territorial integrity and supporting national security. It comprises the South African Army, South African Air Force, South African Navy and the South African Military Health Service, operating under civilian oversight through the Department of Defence. The SANDF was formed in 1994 through the integration of the former apartheid-era South African Defence Force with the armed wings of liberation movements, including Umkhonto we Sizwe and the Azanian People's Liberation Army, as part of the country's democratic transition. Its mandate covers border safeguarding, peacekeeping and peace-support operations, and assistance to civilian authorities during emergencies and internal unrest. The force has deployed troops in support of regional stability efforts, including missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other parts of sub-Saharan Africa under African Union and Southern African Development Community frameworks. It has also been used domestically to combat illegal mining activity and support the South African Police Service in high-crime areas. The SANDF reports to the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans and is headed by a Chief of the SANDF. Budget constraints in recent years have raised concerns about equipment readiness, troop welfare and the force's capacity to sustain external deployments. It remains a significant institution in South Africa's post-apartheid history and in broader African security cooperation.
