SANDF

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is the military organisation responsible for the defence of South Africa. It was established in 1994 following the end of apartheid, integrating the former South African Defence Force, the armed wings of the African National Congress and Pan Africanist Congress, and the defence forces of the former homelands. The SANDF comprises four services: the South African Army, the South African Air Force, the South African Navy and the South African Military Health Service. It operates under civilian control, with the President of South Africa serving as commander-in-chief and the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans providing executive oversight. The force's primary mandate includes protecting South Africa's sovereignty and territorial integrity, supporting civil authorities in maintaining law and order, and participating in international peacekeeping operations under the auspices of the African Union and United Nations. In recent years, the SANDF has been increasingly deployed domestically to assist the South African Police Service in combating illegal mining, border security operations and disaster relief. The force faces ongoing challenges including budget constraints, ageing equipment and personnel shortages. Its headquarters are located in Pretoria, and it maintains bases and facilities across all nine provinces. The SANDF plays a significant role in South Africa's security architecture and regional stability efforts across southern Africa.
