Rare Earth Elements

Rare earth elements are a group of 17 metallic elements comprising the 15 lanthanides plus scandium and yttrium, which share similar chemical properties and occur together in geological deposits. Despite their name, most rare earths are relatively abundant in the Earth's crust, but economically viable concentrations are uncommon and extraction is technically challenging. The elements are critical inputs for high-technology applications including permanent magnets, catalysts, phosphors, ceramics and glass polishing. Neodymium and praseodymium are essential for the powerful permanent magnets used in electric vehicle motors and wind turbine generators, making them strategically important for the energy transition. Dysprosium and terbium enhance magnet performance at high temperatures. Lanthanum and cerium find use in catalytic converters, battery alloys and petroleum refining. China dominates global rare earth production, processing and refining, controlling about 60% of mine output and more than 85% of processing capacity, which has prompted efforts by other countries to develop alternative supply chains. Demand for rare earths is forecast to grow rapidly as electric vehicle adoption accelerates and renewable energy deployment expands. Environmental concerns around rare earth mining and processing, which generate radioactive and toxic waste, have constrained new project development in some jurisdictions. Prices for individual rare earth oxides are volatile and vary widely depending on the specific element, purity and market conditions.
