Polymers

Polymers are large molecules composed of repeating structural units called monomers, chemically bonded together in long chains. They form the basis of the plastics and synthetic materials industry, which is a major manufacturing sector globally and across Africa. Polymers are produced through polymerisation processes that link monomers into macromolecular structures with diverse physical and chemical properties. The industry encompasses commodity polymers such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride, as well as engineering polymers and specialty materials used in automotive, packaging, construction, textiles and electronics applications. Major polymer producers operate petrochemical complexes that convert feedstocks such as ethylene, propylene and other hydrocarbons into finished resins and compounds. The sector is capital-intensive and sensitive to feedstock costs, energy prices and global trade dynamics. In southern Africa, polymer production is concentrated in South Africa, where companies such as Safripol manufacture polyethylene and polypropylene for domestic and regional markets. The industry faces competition from imports, particularly from Asia, and has been the subject of trade remedies including antidumping duties to protect local manufacturing. Polymers are central to downstream value chains in packaging, automotive components and consumer goods, making the sector strategically important for industrial development. Environmental concerns over plastic waste and the push for recycling and bio-based alternatives are shaping the industry's evolution.
