OpenAI

OpenAI is an American artificial intelligence research and deployment company headquartered in San Francisco, California. The company develops and operates advanced AI systems, including large language models and generative AI technologies. OpenAI is best known for its ChatGPT conversational AI platform, which launched in November 2022 and rapidly became one of the fastest-growing consumer applications in history. The company also develops GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) models, DALL-E image generation systems and other AI tools that are integrated into enterprise and consumer products worldwide. OpenAI operates as a capped-profit entity with a complex corporate structure that includes a non-profit parent organisation and a for-profit subsidiary. Microsoft holds a significant investment stake in the company and has integrated OpenAI's technologies into products such as Microsoft Copilot and Azure cloud services. The company employs several hundred staff across research, engineering and safety teams. OpenAI competes with other major AI developers including Google, Anthropic and Meta in the rapidly evolving generative AI market. The organisation was founded in December 2015 as a non-profit AI research laboratory with a mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity, transitioning to its current capped-profit structure in 2019 to attract the capital required for large-scale AI development.
