Mamady Doumbouya

Mamady Doumbouya is a Guinean military officer and politician who serves as the transitional president of Guinea. He came to power on September 5, 2021, following a military coup that ousted President Alpha Condé, who had been in office since 2010 and had controversially amended the constitution to seek a third term. Doumbouya, who previously commanded the Special Forces Group, dissolved the government and suspended the constitution, citing corruption, mismanagement and political instability as justifications for the takeover. He established a transitional government and promised to restore civilian rule, though the timeline for elections has been subject to international scrutiny and pressure from regional bodies including the Economic Community of West African States. As transitional president, Doumbouya has positioned himself as a reformer focused on economic development and governance improvements in Guinea, a country rich in mineral resources including bauxite, iron ore and gold. His administration has engaged with major mining projects, including the development of the Simandou iron ore deposit, one of the world's largest untapped high-grade iron ore reserves. Doumbouya's government has sought to renegotiate mining contracts and increase state revenues from the extractive sector, while also addressing poverty and infrastructure deficits. His leadership has attracted both domestic support from those frustrated with previous governance and criticism from international observers concerned about democratic backsliding and the extended transition period. The military junta under Doumbouya has faced sanctions from regional bodies and pressure from international financial institutions including the World Bank and International Monetary Fund to establish a clear path to constitutional governance.
