Kalahari Manganese Field

The Kalahari Manganese Field is a world-class manganese ore deposit located in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, near the town of Hotazel. It is one of the largest known manganese resources on Earth, containing an estimated 70% to 80% of the world's identified land-based manganese reserves. The field extends over an area of approximately 35 kilometres in length and up to 15 kilometres in width, with ore bodies occurring at varying depths. Manganese from the Kalahari Manganese Field is used primarily in steelmaking as an alloying agent and in the production of batteries, making it strategically important to global industry. Major mining operations in the field include Tshipi Borwa, operated by a consortium including Exxaro and OM Holdings, and Hotazel Manganese Mines, among others. The region's manganese is typically mined using openpit and underground methods, with ore transported by rail to the port of Ngqura for export. The Kalahari Manganese Field has been a cornerstone of South Africa's mining economy for decades and continues to attract investment as demand for manganese grows, driven by steel production and the energy transition. The field's geology is characterised by sedimentary manganese ore layers of the Hotazel Formation, deposited more than two billion years ago. Mining in the area began in the early twentieth century and has expanded significantly since the 1970s.
