Internet Of Things

The Internet of Things is a network of physical devices embedded with sensors, software and connectivity that enables them to collect, exchange and act on data without human intervention. Devices range from consumer products such as smart thermostats and wearables to industrial equipment including sensors on manufacturing lines, fleet vehicles and infrastructure. The technology relies on wireless protocols, cloud computing and data analytics to link objects to the internet and to each other, creating systems that can monitor conditions, optimise processes and trigger automated responses. Key sectors adopting the Internet of Things include manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, healthcare, energy and smart cities, where real-time data improves efficiency, reduces downtime and supports predictive maintenance. In industrial settings, the Internet of Things underpins Industry 4.0 initiatives by connecting machinery, supply chains and enterprise systems into integrated digital ecosystems. Adoption has accelerated with falling sensor costs, widespread mobile broadband and advances in edge computing, though challenges around data security, interoperability and network reliability remain. The technology is mature in pilot and niche deployments but still scaling towards ubiquitous integration across industries. Early concepts emerged in the late 1990s, with the term itself coined around 1999, and commercial rollout gathered pace through the 2010s as connectivity standards and cloud platforms matured.
