G7

The G7 (Group of Seven) is an intergovernmental political forum comprising seven of the world's largest advanced economies: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. The organisation serves as a platform for discussing and coordinating policy on major global economic, political and security issues. G7 members collectively represent about 40% of global gross domestic product and 10% of the world's population. The group meets annually at a summit hosted by the member holding the rotating presidency, where heads of state and government discuss challenges ranging from economic stability and trade to climate change, health security and international development. The European Union also participates in all G7 discussions. Finance ministers and central bank governors hold separate meetings throughout the year to coordinate monetary and fiscal policy. The G7 has no formal charter or permanent secretariat, operating instead through consensus and voluntary commitments. It emerged from the Library Group, an informal gathering of finance ministers from the United States, the United Kingdom, West Germany, Japan and France that first met in 1973. The group expanded to include Italy in 1975 and Canada in 1976, becoming the G7. Russia joined in 1998 to form the G8 but was suspended in 2014 following its annexation of Crimea. The G7 remains influential in shaping international economic governance and coordinating responses to global crises, though its relative economic weight has declined with the rise of emerging economies.
