Fischer-Tropsch

Fischer-Tropsch is a chemical process that converts a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, known as synthesis gas, into liquid hydrocarbons. It works through a catalysed reaction, typically using iron or cobalt catalysts, that builds longer hydrocarbon chains from these simple gas molecules under controlled temperature and pressure. The process was developed in Germany in the 1920s by chemists Franz Fischer and Hans Tropsch, originally to produce synthetic fuels from coal. It gained industrial prominence in South Africa, where Sasol built the world's largest commercial application of the technology to convert coal and natural gas into liquid fuels and chemicals. More recently, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis has drawn renewed interest as a route to produce sustainable aviation fuel and other synthetic fuels when combined with green hydrogen from electrolysis and captured carbon dioxide. This power-to-liquids pathway allows renewable electricity to be converted into energy-dense liquid fuels compatible with existing engines and aircraft, avoiding the need for new transport infrastructure. Projects pairing renewable energy with Fischer-Tropsch conversion are being explored in regions such as the Western Cape, including around Saldanha Bay, as part of broader green hydrogen development ambitions. Catalyst technology providers, including specialist chemicals companies, continue to refine the efficiency and selectivity of the process. The technology's maturity for coal- and gas-to-liquids applications is well established, while its application to green synthetic fuels remains at an earlier, developmental stage. Its relevance lies in offering a decarbonisation pathway for hard-to-abate sectors such as aviation, where direct electrification is not feasible.
