Durban Container Terminal

Durban Container Terminal is a major container-handling facility at the Port of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is one of the busiest container terminals on the African continent and serves as a critical gateway for South African and regional trade. The terminal is operated by Transnet Port Terminals, a division of the state-owned freight logistics group Transnet. It handles millions of twenty-foot equivalent units annually, processing imports and exports for South Africa's manufacturing and retail sectors as well as cargo destined for landlocked neighbours including Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana. The facility comprises multiple berths equipped with ship-to-shore gantry cranes, straddle carriers and reach stackers. Durban Container Terminal plays a central role in the country's supply-chain infrastructure, and congestion or operational disruptions at the terminal have economy-wide consequences. The terminal falls under the regulatory oversight of the National Ports Authority, which manages South Africa's commercial harbours. Expansion and efficiency programmes have been undertaken over the years to increase throughput and reduce vessel turnaround times. The terminal's performance is closely watched by exporters, importers and shipping lines as a barometer of port competitiveness in the region.
