Council For Geoscience

The Council For Geoscience is a statutory science council and South Africa's national geoscience organisation, operating under the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. Its mandate is to provide geoscience knowledge products and services to government, industry and the public in support of sustainable development, particularly in the minerals, energy and water sectors. The council conducts geological mapping, geophysical surveys, geochemical analysis and geohazard assessments across South Africa and increasingly throughout the African continent. It maintains national geoscience databases and collections, including rock samples, borehole cores and geological maps that underpin exploration and land-use planning. The organisation plays a key role in identifying and characterising mineral resources, including critical minerals, and in supporting artisanal and small-scale mining through technical guidance and geological information. The Council For Geoscience also advises government on geoscience matters, contributes to policy development and collaborates with international geoscience bodies. It operates regional offices and laboratories equipped for advanced analytical work, and its research informs decisions on mining licences, environmental management and infrastructure development. The council was established in 1912 as the Geological Survey of South Africa and was reconstituted under the Geoscience Act of 1993, which formalised its role as a science council serving the public interest.
