Copper World

Copper World is a copper development project located in Pima County, Arizona, in the United States, held by Hudbay Minerals. The project targets a large-scale, open-pit mining operation with an associated processing facility designed to produce copper concentrate and, in later phases, copper cathode. It forms part of Hudbay Minerals' strategy to expand its copper production base in the Americas alongside its Constancia mine in Peru and Snow Lake operations in Manitoba. Copper World is positioned within the broader Arizona copper belt, an established mining region with existing infrastructure and a skilled workforce. The project has attracted interest from partners including Mitsubishi Corporation, which has taken an equity stake to support its development. Copper is classified as a critical mineral given its central role in electrification, renewable energy and electric-vehicle supply chains, and Copper World is intended to help meet growing demand for domestically produced copper in North America. Permitting, community engagement and environmental approvals have been significant factors in the project's timeline, as is common for large open-pit developments in the United States. Hudbay Minerals has outlined phased development plans for Copper World, beginning with an initial production phase before expanding capacity. The project's advancement reflects broader industry efforts to secure new copper supply amid rising global demand and constrained project pipelines. Executives, including Hudbay Minerals leadership such as Peter Kukielski, have highlighted Copper World as a key growth pillar for the company.
