Carbon-in-Leach

Carbon-in-leach is a hydrometallurgical process used primarily in gold extraction to recover precious metals from ore or tailings. The technology combines the leaching and adsorption stages into a single process, wherein crushed ore or tailings are mixed with a cyanide solution to dissolve gold, and activated carbon is added simultaneously to adsorb the dissolved gold from the slurry. This integration improves efficiency and reduces processing time compared to older methods that separate leaching and adsorption into distinct steps. Carbon-in-leach is widely adopted in gold mining operations globally, particularly for processing lower-grade ores and tailings where maximising recovery is economically critical. The activated carbon, once loaded with gold, is separated from the slurry and subjected to elution and electrowinning to strip and recover the gold. The process is favoured for its relatively low capital cost, operational simplicity and high recovery rates, making it suitable for both large-scale mines and smaller tailings retreatment facilities. Carbon-in-leach technology has been instrumental in extending the economic life of gold deposits and enabling the reprocessing of historical tailings in regions such as South Africa's Witwatersrand. The method was developed and commercialised in the 1970s and has since become a standard technique in the global gold mining industry.
