Black Mountain Mining

Black Mountain Mining is an underground zinc, lead and copper mine located near Aggeneys in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. The operation is owned and operated by Vedanta Zinc International, part of the Vedanta Resources group. The mine extracts ore from the Black Mountain orebody, which contains economically significant concentrations of zinc, lead and copper sulphides. Black Mountain Mining processes the ore on site to produce zinc, lead and copper concentrates that are transported for further refining. The facility has been in operation since the 1970s and represents one of the key mining assets in the Namakwa region. It sits within the broader Aggeneys mining complex, which also includes the newer Gamsberg zinc mine operated by the same parent company. The mine is a significant employer in the Northern Cape and contributes to the regional economy through direct employment, procurement from local suppliers and infrastructure development. Black Mountain Mining has been integrated into discussions around the Namakwa Special Economic Zone and the proposed Boegoebaai port project, which aim to enhance the competitiveness of mining operations in the region. The operation continues to be a cornerstone of base metals production in South Africa's Northern Cape mining belt.
