Gamsberg Phase II expansion project.

Location
Namakwa Special Economic Zone, in the Northern Cape, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
Vedanta Zinc International (VZI) subsidiary Black Mountain Mining (BBM).

Project Description
Gamsberg II involves the expansion of mining capacity from four-million tonnes a year to eight-million tonnes a year. Metal in concentrate will increase from an estimated 250 000 t/y to 470 000 t/y.

The project includes the construction of a four-million-tonne-a-year concentrator plant. 

Its current mineral reserves and resources show a potential life-of-mine of 29 years.

Potential Job Creation
The project is expected to create 2 000 to 2 500 jobs during the construction phase and a further 400 to 600 permanent jobs during the peak operations phase. 

Capital Expenditure
Approved capital expenditure has been estimated at $545-million.    

Planned Start/End Date
The expansion project was approved in the fourth quarter of the 2021/22 financial year, with completion is targeted for the second half of the 2026 financial year. 

Latest Developments
Overall progress was estimated at 95.5% as of May 13, 2026.
