Battery Metals

Battery metals is an industry term encompassing the group of raw materials essential for manufacturing rechargeable batteries, particularly lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles, consumer electronics and energy storage systems. The category principally includes lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite and manganese, though definitions vary and may extend to copper, aluminium and rare earths depending on battery chemistry and application. These metals have become strategically significant as global demand for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage accelerates, driving investment in mining, refining and recycling capacity. Lithium is prized for its light weight and high electrochemical potential, cobalt for energy density and thermal stability, nickel for increasing battery range, and graphite as the dominant anode material. Supply chains are geographically concentrated, with the Democratic Republic of Congo accounting for most cobalt output, China dominating refining and processing across multiple battery metals, and Indonesia and Australia leading in nickel and lithium respectively. Price volatility, ethical sourcing concerns and geopolitical competition have made battery metals a focal point for governments seeking to secure domestic supply and reduce reliance on single-source producers. The sector faces challenges including long lead times for new mine development, environmental and social risks associated with extraction, and the need to scale recycling infrastructure as first-generation electric vehicle batteries reach end of life. Battery metals markets are closely watched by automakers, technology companies and policymakers as indicators of the energy transition's pace and resilience.
