The World Coal Association (WCA) has announced the launch of its inaugural Leadership and Excellence Awards programme.

The awards will be held yearly and this year’s awards will be presented in November during the WCA’s International Coal and Climate Summit, in Poland.

“The summit brings together the leadership of the world’s largest coal producing companies, other business leaders, senior policymakers, development banks, academics and representatives of nongovernmental organisations to discuss the role of coal in the global economy against the backdrop of the climate change agenda,” says WCA CEO Milton Catelin.

The WCA Leadership and Excellence Awards has been estab- lished to recognise outstanding achievement and innovation in the international coal industry and its value chain.

The awards are open to companies and organisations active in the field of coal mining, coal use or coal technologies, including non-WCA members and nonproducing coal companies.

The WCA awards will consist of four categories – excellence in environmental practice, excellence in low-carbon technologies, leadership in innovative coal technologies and leadership in mining safety.

“These prestigious awards are an opportunity for the coal industry to recognise and honour those companies that have achieved an outstanding level of success in these areas and to drive further environmental and safety improvements,” says Catelin.

Entries close on September 16. Winners will be announced at the summit.
