Weir’s African footprint delivers faster support, reliable aftermarket service to mining customers
With mining operations across Africa placing increasing pressure on equipment reliability, uptime and operational efficiency, mine processing equipment supplier Weir continues to strengthen its South African manufacturing footprint to better support customers across the continent through local manufacturing capability, regional technical expertise and rapid access to critical spares and components.
The company has committed significant capital investment across its African operations to expand manufacturing capacity, improve throughput and strengthen customer support capabilities. This investment strategy is closely aligned to Weir’s focus on maintaining strong operational, technical and aftermarket support structures in the regions where its mining customers operate.
Central to this approach is ensuring that mining operations across Africa have rapid access not only to equipment but also to technical expertise, field service support and locally available spare parts that minimise downtime and support operational continuity.
In South Africa, these investments span Weir’s Alrode, Isando and Gqeberha manufacturing facilities which collectively serve as an important manufacturing and supply base for customers across the African continent and the broader Europe, Middle East and Africa region.
The Alrode facility in Gauteng serves as a major assembly operation for pumps and screens while also housing the company’s LINATEX® rubber lining operation, hose manufacturing activities and a regional distribution centre supporting customers throughout Africa.
The site recently underwent a major expansion through the addition of a dedicated 1 600 m² production facility to support growing demand for ENDURON® Elite screens. This investment has significantly increased local manufacturing capacity while strengthening Weir’s ability to supply high performance screening equipment into African mining markets with reduced lead times and improved regional support.
Modern mining operations increasingly require high capacity equipment capable of operating reliably in demanding environments while maintaining throughput and efficiency. The ENDURON® Elite banana screens manufactured at Alrode are designed specifically for these applications and can reach dimensions of up to 4.3 m x 8.5 m with unit weights exceeding 50 tonnes.
While the expansion supports global demand for the ENDURON® Elite range, it also reinforces Weir’s ability to support mining customers across Africa through local assembly capability, technical support infrastructure and faster access to replacement components and wear parts.
Weir’s Heavy Bay Foundry in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, South Africa, also underwent a substantial expansion programme aimed at increasing production capacity for large slurry pump components and heavy media cyclone equipment widely used throughout African mining operations.
The investment effectively doubled foundry production capacity from 400 t/m to 800 t/m, strengthening Weir’s ability to support growing demand for heavy-duty mining equipment both within Africa and internationally.
Weir’s Isando operation has similarly evolved into an advanced manufacturing hub focused on smaller pump components, precision manufacturing and rapid production turnaround, supporting the company’s broader aftermarket and service requirements across the region.
Importantly, these facilities form part of a broader operational support network that enables Weir to maintain close proximity to customers throughout Africa. In addition to manufacturing capability, the company continues to invest heavily in technical expertise, field service support and aftermarket infrastructure to ensure mining customers have access to specialised support when and where it is needed.
This includes maintaining regional support capabilities, local technical teams and strategically positioned inventory that allows for rapid access to critical spares and wear components - an increasingly important factor in mining environments where unplanned downtime can have significant operational and financial consequences.
Beyond South Africa, Weir has continued expanding its operational footprint across key mining regions in Africa, including West Africa and Central Africa, where mining activity continues to grow rapidly across commodities such as gold, copper and critical minerals. Through regional service centres, field service teams, technical specialists and distribution capabilities, the company is able to provide closer on-the-ground support to customers operating in remote and often challenging mining environments.
In West Africa, where mining operations are frequently located far from major industrial centres, rapid access to technical support and replacement components is particularly important. Weir’s regional presence enables the company to respond more effectively to customer requirements while supporting maintenance planning, equipment optimisation and operational reliability.
Similarly, in Central Africa, where copper and cobalt mining operations continue to expand, local technical support capability and dependable aftermarket service have become increasingly important to maintaining production continuity. Weir’s regional support infrastructure assists customers in reducing downtime, improving equipment performance and extending operational life cycles in demanding applications.
As mining operations across Africa continue to pursue higher productivity, greater reliability and improved operational efficiency, Weir’s ongoing investments in local manufacturing, regional support infrastructure and technical capability position the company to support customers more effectively across the continent. By combining advanced manufacturing capability with strong aftermarket support, local technical expertise and rapid access to parts, Weir continues to reinforce its long-term commitment to Africa’s mining sector.
