WEATHER WARNING

18th September 2026

Not all the extreme weather events of 2026 are linked directly to the development of what some are calling a ‘Super El Niño’. However, drought and weakening monsoon rainfall in Asia have been attributed to the phenomenon, which has developed rapidly after the 2025/26 La Niña. The South African Weather Service expects the El Niño to persist through the 2026/27 summer. This has led the Department of Agriculture to warn of below-normal summer rainfall and high temperatures, with potential consequences for crops, livestock and water availability.
