JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Australia-based innovation programme for the global resources sector, Unearthed, will host a ‘hackathon’ event in Cape Town from February 5 to 7 – its first international event.

Unearthed’s ‘hackathon’ events brought together young software developers, designers and industry insiders to develop prototype solutions for challenges facing the resources sector.

Challenges and data sets from global miner Anglo American would be presented to students from major South African universities, as well as engineers, designers, data scientists, entrepreneurs and developers, who would try to develop possible solutions.

“Technology implementation costs time and money – two critical resources that the mining sector currently requires to reinvent itself. The Unearthed hackathon is the perfect platform to fast-track innovation and short-circuit the process,” Anglo American technology and innovation head Jeannette McGill said.

The winners of Unearthed Cape Town would present their solutions at the Investing in African Mining Indaba on February 11, while cash prizes would also be awarded in various categories.
