Labour union UASA says it has concluded a favourable two-year wage agreement at gold mining company Kopanong gold mine, located between the North West and Free State provinces.

The union says the agreement applies to permanent Category 4 to 8 employees, including miners, artisans and officials, and key provisions of the agreement include a salary increase of R1 000 a month in both the first and second year for surface and underground employees, and a 5% increase on the standard rate of pay in the first and second year for miners and artisans.

The agreement also includes an increase of R1 000 or 5%, whichever is greater, for lower-level officials and a 5% increase on the standard rate of pay for officials in both the first and second years.

Additionally, UASA highlights that a living-out allowance for all employees within the bargaining unit will increase by R100, rising to R2 650 a month in the first year and to R2 750 a month in the second year.

Meanwhile, UASA also acknowledges the constructive engagement and cooperation demonstrated by Kopanong gold mine and other respective labour organisations during the negotiations, which contributed to achieving a mutually beneficial outcome.

The agreement is effective from July 1.
