Transnet needs to respond to competitive environment – Teke
Freight logistics group Transnet has, through its R307.5-billion Market Demand Strategy (MDS), which is aimed at improving the State-owned entity’s operations and increasing its capacity, demonstrated that it understands market demand and the need to grow bulk commodities, Chamber of Mines president Mike Teke said on Tuesday.
The next challenge would be for Transnet to respond to the competitive environment in which South Africa found itself, he added.
Speaking during the opening plenary session of the Africa Rail 2014 conference, in Sandton, he said the freight logistics group was specifically facing challenges in terms of the export market, where competition was fierce and demand had softened in several areas.
“Various initiatives exist for government, Transnet and the private sector to join forces and position South Africa’s exports in the global market space; [however], this type of engagement requires a level of maturity and a deep desire to see South Africa, rather than individual commodity producers and exporters, [succeed],” he commented.
Teke added that, to see the country succeed, rather than only individual companies and service providers, the National Development Plan (NDP) had to be implemented immediately.
He stated that the implementation of the NDP would enhance cooperation between all stakeholders, business and government.
“We do not need a new plan; this is it,” he said about the NDP.
“We should not be comfortable to operate in an environment where we are good at developing plans and strategies without implementing them, and not only that but ensure that they are implemented effectively and efficiently,” Teke stated.
In closing, he also noted that South Africa’s effectiveness in delivering these strategies and plans, such as the NDP and the MDS would, in turn, enable the country to find an efficient, effective and low-cost freight solution to take the economy forward.
