South Africa’s stunning battery manganese price lead must be locally capitalised

South Africa makes the purest manganese metal in the world. Not even China is able to match South Africa’s 99.9%-pure outcome. Moreover, South Africa’s way of turning that ultra-pure metal into battery-grade manganese is exceptional. What is hugely advantageous is that South Africa is able to make money by selling the battery manganese at $2 500/t amid the feasibility studies of many other hopefuls pointing to the need for as much as double that.

What is very perplexing, however, is the decision of South Africa’s State-owned Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) to support a considerably longer-term and unproven effort of a Canada-owned operation in Botswana. One is hopeful that the IDC will competently redo its sums and adequately fund South Africa’s battery manganese lead before it is too late.
