The Seriti Power Community Trust, in collaboration with Fraser Alexander and through its partnership with the Minerals Council South Africa, the National Prosecuting Authority and the Gauteng Department of Health, has handed over the newly constructed Kopanong Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) at Kopanong Provincial Hospital in Vereeniging, Gauteng.

The R7 million investment by the Seriti Power Community Trust towards the construction of the facility reinforces Seriti’s commitment to strengthening survivor-centred services and creating lasting social value in the communities where it operates. The 365m² centre will strengthen access to integrated, survivor-centred services for victims and survivors of gender-based violence and related forms of violence across the Sedibeng community and surrounding areas.

The centre comprises a range of purpose-built spaces designed to support effective service delivery, including:

  • A boardroom
  • TCC Coordinator and Facility Manager offices
  • Clinician, Counsellor and South African Police Service offices
  • Social worker offices
  • Consulting rooms
  • Child-friendly facilities
  • A filing room
  • A storeroom
  • A kitchen
  • Accessible and standard ablution facilities, including toilets and showers
  • A sluice unit

The centre brings clinical, counselling, social work, law enforcement and other essential services into a dedicated environment. This integrated approach is intended to provide survivors with coordinated, compassionate and accessible support in a safe and dignified setting, while ensuring that children who access the centre are accommodated appropriately.

Mike Teke, Group Chief Executive Officer of Seriti Resources, said: “The Kopanong Thuthuzela Care Centre is a meaningful example of what can be achieved when government, business and community partners collaborate around a shared social purpose. For survivors of gender-based violence and abuse, access to timely, coordinated and compassionate support can make a profound difference in their journey towards healing and recovery. We are proud to contribute to a facility that strengthens these essential services and upholds the dignity, wellbeing and rights of survivors and their families. This partnership reflects our commitment to creating lasting value in the communities where we operate and to being a responsible corporate citizen in addressing challenges that impact society.”

The project demonstrates the importance of collaboration between government, industry and community stakeholders in addressing critical social challenges. It also supported local economic participation by creating twenty short-term employment opportunities through local business subcontracting.

The Seriti Power Community Trust extends its appreciation to the Minerals Council South Africa, the National Prosecuting Authority, the Gauteng Department of Health, the Emfuleni Local Municipality and Fraser Alexander for their role in the successful delivery of the facility.

The Kopanong Thuthuzela Care Centre reflects a shared commitment to survivor support, dignity and safer, more resilient communities.
