JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The Companies and Intellectual Property Commission has registered the special resolution for the name change of JSE-listed Sable Platinum to Sable Metals and Minerals, together with all prescribed documents, Sable said in a statement on Wednesday.

Subsequently, the last day to trade in the company’s existing shares on the JSE would be February 28, with trading under the new name to start on March 3.

The company said in January that the word ‘platinum’ in the name Sable Platinum had tended to eclipse the presence of vanadium and iron-ore in its portfolio and also gave the company too little latitude to function as a diversified exploration company, adding that current market conditions ruled out any development of platinum assets.

“Right at the moment, I don’t think any platinum companies other than Ivanhoe are looking at developing any new assets,” Sable CEO James Allan said in January.

Sable had also entered into an agreement to acquire up to 26% of Global Initiatives, a Botswana company that had the rights to process the tailings and slag at BCL, a nickel, copper and cobalt mine at Selebi Phikwe, in Botswana – “another reason why the change of name has become necessary”, he said.
