Post-employment health monitoring and family support in mining
For mining companies, employee welfare does not end when a worker leaves the gate. Effective post-employment support depends on practical field-based services that help mines respond to health, welfare and benefit-related obligations.
TEBA On Mine onboarding extends beyond the immediate requirement of mineworkers and contractors gaining site access. By linking comprehensive personal and family profiles, employee nominations for benefit payments, employment profiles and verified work histories, TEBA helps clients maintain the information needed to support workers long after employment ends.
This broader role is reflected in two important post-employment services: health monitoring and support following a serious or fatal accident.
TEBA Home Based Care monitors the health and wellbeing of employees and their families at home. This support may be required where an individual has failed a medical assessment and needs a short intervention for a lifestyle disease, has been diagnosed with TB, or has been involved in a serious accident. Care supporters visit households to confirm that the required support is in place and that treatment protocols are being followed. Regular, verified reports enable mine medical personnel to assess whether additional support is required and, where possible, reintegrate individuals into the workforce, retaining valuable skills and competency. Field reports also support DMPR and MCSA reporting by providing evidence of progress against the sector’s 95-95-95 targets: 95% screened, 95% on treatment and 95% effectively treated.
Serious and fatal accidents place an immense responsibility on employers to ensure that employees and their families are treated with respect and dignity while they cope with loss and the stresses associated with subsequent hearings and enquiries.
TEBA provides one-stop support, including:
- A first point of contact to inform bereaved families in a culturally sensitive and appropriate manner.
- Logistical support for official delegations during family visits, including travel, accommodation and related assistance.
- Logistical support for families attending enquiries and other formal proceedings.
- Administrative support to mines and families to ensure that benefits are distributed timeously, including funeral payments, pension or provident fund claims and other related benefits.
- Support for mine education and social and labour plan initiatives aimed at assisting families, such as bursary payments and housing projects.
Serious injuries, such as spinal cord injuries, may require additional support in the form of assistive devices and home adaptations to accommodate the injured employee in a dignified manner. TEBA oversees all aspects of these renovations, including consultation, the signing of plans, project management, the appointment and payment of contractors, and site handovers.
These services provide a practical way for mining customers to honour their post-employment commitments across both doorstep communities and distant labour-sending regions.
