NUM to march to Blyvoor
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) will on Wednesday march to the Blyvooruitzicht mine head office, in Carletonville, to hand over a list of demands to the mine’s new owner Goldrich, as well as its liquidators.
The NUM’s demands included the payment of monies owed to its members employed by the mine, where the workforce had not been paid since September 2013.
The union was also demanding that exit medical examinations be given to its members to allow them to look for other jobs, as the workers realised they had no future at the Blyvoor mine, NUM acting spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu told Mining Weekly Online.
Further, the NUM was also asking the liquidators to immediately halt the sale of the village in which the workers lived, as no proper consultation with the community had been done.
The lack of safety and security in this village was also of concern as the residents were being robbed and raped with no police visibility.
“We are demanding that Goldrich and the liquidators make provision for security in the village and that a police station is erected in the area,” Mammburu said.
Lastly, the union would also demand that the water supply in the village be improved.
The mining company could not immediately be reached for comment.
