JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Mining production decreased by 0.8% year-on-year in November, owing to a drop in the production of iron-ore, other metallic minerals and manganese ore, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) revealed on Thursday.

Iron-ore output fell 20.4%, metallic minerals output 35%, while manganese ore production dropped 14.7%.

The platinum group metals (PGMs) industry, once again, made a significant positive contribution, with production up 24.9% year-on-year.

Meanwhile, seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 2.4% in November compared with October, which followed month-on-month changes of 1.7% in October and a 4% contraction in September.

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 3.1% for the three months ended November, compared with the previous three months.

The main contributors to the contraction were coal, manganese ore, metallic minerals, PGMs and iron-ore.

Stats SA data further showed that mineral sales had decreased by 2.8% year-on-year in October. The largest negative contributor was iron-ore, falling 50.8%.

Gold and PGMs made significant positive contributions, with increases of 16.1% and 10.4% respectively.

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices increased by 1% in October, compared with September. This followed month-on-month changes of 1.5% in September and 0.2% in August.
