JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Whitehaven Coal on Monday announced that longwall production at its Narrabri mine, in New South Wales, had restarted.

The company said that production on the third longwall panel had now begun, following the longwall-change out after mining on the second longwall panel had been completed in January.

“Narrabri has reported strong performance with record production and sales for the first half of the 2014 financial year. Longwall production in panel three starting safely, on schedule and on budget is positive news and, significantly, moves the mine into a one-change-out-a-year mode of operation,” Whitehaven MD and CEO Paul Flynn commented.

Run-of-mine coal production at Narrabri for the first half of the 2014 financial year amounted to 3.29-million tons, which was a record result for Whitehaven, with 193 000 t produced in a single week.

Saleable coal production for the first half was 2.91-million tons, and on an annualised basis, production for the December quarter exceeded the 6-million-ton-a-year nameplate capacity of the mine, which was a significant achievement for a mine that had only been operating commercially for 18 months, the company said.
