Minister sets up technical team to resolve platinum strike
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Newly appointed Mineral Resource Minister Advocate Ngoako Ramatlhodi has set up an intergovernmental technical team to work with labour and business to resolve the strike on the platinum belt that has entered its fifth month, the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) said on Wednesday.
The team, comprising officials from the DMR, the Department of Labour and National Treasury would meet on Thursday supported by representatives from the platinum companies and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU).
The establishment of the technical team followed the Minister’s meetings with labour unions and business (represented by the CEOs of platinum producers Lonmin, Impala Platinum and Anglo American Platinum and the Chamber of Mines) on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.
“The mandate of the technical team is to broaden the approach and explore all possibilities for a resolution to the problem. They will [review] all the information, including the figures provided by both parties, and report back by the end of the day on what is possible,” Ramatlhodi said.
“All parties are hurting. The workers are hurting. We have no option but to find an amicable solution,” he added.
Ramatlhodi further reiterated government’s commitment to this process, stating that it was supportive of other processes under way, including the Labour Court mediation, which was believed to have stopped on Tuesday.
Currently, AMCU was demanding an entry-level basic wage of R12 500 over a four-year period, while the platinum producers’ latest offer would see workers earn a minimum cash remuneration – comprising basic wages and holiday, living-out and other allowances – of R12 500 a month by 2017.
