ASX-listed Ionic Rare Earths has appointed James Rutherford nonexecutive director effective immediately.

He initially joined the company in an advisory role in February, with the nonexecutive director appointment now aimed at strengthening the board prior to finalising capital for the Belfast magnet recycling facility, in Northern Ireland.

Rutherford has about 25 years' experience in investment management and banking in the global mining and metals sector. He is currently also a nonexecutive director of UK-listed Ecora Royalties and Australia-listed Perseus Mining, while holding director positions at Manara Minerals Investment and Colombia Copper.

He formerly worked as a nonexecutive director of Anglo American and nonexecutive chairperson of Centamin before its acquisition by AngloGold Ashanti.

Ionic Rare Earths MD Tim Harrison says Rutherford has made a significant contribution towards advancing the company's UK expansion strategy. "His appointment to the board will allow for his added input into key decisions that are driving the company's future.

"Rutherford has a strong reputation in capital markets and board governance, which will hold us in good stead as we approach this next phase of growth. Additionally, as a native of Belfast, Rutherford brings first-hand knowledge of the local commercial and government environment."
