Industrial partnerships - From food production to the infrastructure economy
The breadth of SEW-EURODRIVE’s South African installed base reflects the fact that motion sits behind almost every industrial value chain. The technical challenge changes depending on what is being moved, processed or handled.
Agriculture
Agriculture was part of the company’s regional business long before mining became a major market. In the Lowveld, SEW-EURODRIVE’s applications developed around agriculture, timber and processing, with drive systems operating in environments where dust, heat and seasonal production patterns influence equipment requirements.
Modern agriculture extends well beyond machinery in the field. Packhouses, conveying, sorting, irrigation, grain handling, feed production and processing increasingly resemble sophisticated industrial plants.
For these applications, reliability is often highly time sensitive. A breakdown during peak harvest does not simply defer production; it can compromise throughput during a narrow commercial window. Variable speed control and automation also become increasingly relevant as producers look to match equipment output to changing process demand while controlling energy use.
Food and Beverage
Food and beverage brings a different combination of operational requirements: continuous throughput, controlled movement of product, frequent start-stop operation and, in many processing environments, demanding cleaning regimes.
Historically, this sector formed part of SEW-EURODRIVE’s growth in the Cape and other regions. Today, drive technology increasingly needs to fit into automated processing and packaging lines where speed control and synchronisation directly affect product flow.
Decentralised technology can be particularly useful in conveyor-intensive operations because drive control can be positioned closer to the machinery rather than requiring all electronics to be concentrated in remote panels.
Ports and Logistics
Ports present heavy materials-handling applications, while logistics increasingly demands high numbers of smaller, intelligent drive points. Both sectors place a premium on availability. Bulk conveyors and handling systems may move very large material volumes, requiring industrial gear units capable of continuous high-load operation.
Warehouses and distribution systems, by comparison, may rely on hundreds of conveyor zones where decentralised control and modularity become more important. SEW-EURODRIVE’s early regional history included port-related activity around the Cape and Richards Bay, areas where materials handling and logistics have long formed an important part of the industrial landscape.
Water and Wastewater
Water and wastewater infrastructure introduces a strong energy and process-control dimension. Pumps, mixers, aerators, screens and conveying systems depend on drive technology, often under continuous-duty conditions.
Where process demand varies, variable-speed control allows the equipment output to be matched more closely to actual requirements, rather than running continuously at maximum duty. For this sector, the engineering priorities are dependable operation, energy use and lifecycle support, particularly where infrastructure is expected to remain in service for long periods.
Renewable Energy
Renewable energy should similarly be viewed as an industrial ecosystem rather than simply a solar panel or wind turbine. Generation projects create demand across associated manufacturing, materials handling, logistics, water, processing and infrastructure.
At the same time, the minerals required for electrification and energy-storage technologies increasingly connect the renewable-energy transition back to African mining and mineral processing.
For drive technology suppliers, efficiency is a common consideration across these applications. As industrial electricity costs rise and carbon performance becomes more important, customers are looking beyond individual “efficient products” towards the energy performance of complete systems.
The question becomes whether the motor, gearbox, drive controls and process are working together efficiently. This is where SEW-EURODRIVE’s expanding mechanical, electronics and digital capabilities come together.
