Supplement aids miners’ health

The harsh conditions and exertion associated with mining results in mine workers often not hydrating enough – or in severe cases, becoming dehydrated – in addition to the loss of vital minerals, which can affect their health and ability to work safely, says pharmaceuticals company Specpharm key accounts manager Lee Schmidt.

She explains that by using supplements and hydrating continuously, miners can continue to work without compromising their health.

Inadequate hydration leads to lower reaction times, disorientation, confusion and, in severe cases, to heatstroke and kidney failure.

The long-term effects of continuous inadequate hydration or dehydration could lead to headaches, nausea and vomiting, explains Schmidt.

Adequate hydration is essential for healthy organ function, digestion and nutrient delivery.

Schmidt says a study – titled ‘Hydration Status of Underground Miners in a Temperate Australian Region’ – conducted in Australia in 2013, found that about 58% of mine workers start a shift with inadequate hydration levels, which get more severe throughout their shift.

Further, a study – titled ‘Physiological Strain of Miners at Hot Working Places in German Coal’ – conducted in 2006 in a coal mine, in Germany, found that only 50% to 60% of fluids lost through sweat were replaced during an average shift. Perspiration causes the body to lose sodium and other electrolytes, which are essential to the optimal bodily function and performance.

When drinking water in this state, the water dilutes the sodium and other mineral levels further, which then leads to further fluid loss through urine.

It is very important to take a rehydration supplement to replace lost electrolytes and minerals.

Schmidt adds that symptoms of dehydration can lead to accidents, which, in turn, can result in injuries or even fatalities.

Specpharm’s flagship product, Hydrol, is available at pharmacies and is used in the treatment of electrolyte and fluid depletion associated with diarrhoea.

Specpharm’s Hydrol Sport was specifically developed as support for hydration before, during and after exercise.

Using the correct rehydration products can assist mine workers’ productivity as they will feel healthier and better, she concludes.
